Willkommen beim *frequenzcamping: Anfang Juli wird sich der Garten der Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst wieder für ein Wochenende in einen musizierenden Campingplatz verwandeln. Dabei ist die Versuchsanordnung ganz einfach: kleine Bühne, kleiner Kiosk, eine große Wiese, die auf Zelte wartet und eine geräumige Schublade, die es mit elektronischem Allerlei, musizierend zu füllen gilt: Samplingexperimente, Midi-Eskapaden, Filter-Improvisationen und den Bass immer schön tief.

Ende April haben wir nach Reservierungswünschen für das diesjährige *frequenzcamping gefragt. Es hat keine zehn Stunden gedauert, da kamen auch schon die ersten Rückmeldungen. Das Programm wird bunt und etwas prominenter als 2007. Und dennoch, der offene Charakter ist uns wichtig, denn das *frequenzcamping ist kein Open Air Variante einer Club-Sause.

Die Idee für ein kleines musikalisches Sommercamp kam eher spontan. 2006 setzten wir das *frequenzcafe im Juli kurzer Hand an die frische Luft. Das heißt, es war schwül und wir machten uns keinen Kopf. Schön war es. Nur das Vorzelt vom Wohnwagen hielt dem Gewitter nicht stand. Verliebt hatten wir uns trotzdem. 2007 dann die Premiere. Anfang Mai war da noch nicht einmal klar, ob überhaupt jemand zusagen würde. Die POPUP spielte uns aber in die Taschen. Nach einem Rundgang über die Messe, hatten wir einen, mit Telefonnummern voll gekritzelte Zettel und die Dinge fügten sich. 20 Musiker standen am Ende auf der Bühne und präsentierten über zwei Tage ihre Sicht auf das elektronische Genre. Leipziger Musiker und DJs, die das musikalische Ehrenamt zur
umarmenden Geste werden ließen. Szene übergreifend. Leidenschaftlich.

Das *frequenzcamping ist, wie auch schon das monatlich stattfindende *frequenzcafe, eine non-profit Veranstaltung. Eine Plattform, die jedem offen steht, der sich an den unterschiedlichen Spielarten von elektronischer Musik interessiert zeigt. Als Musiker, DJane, Zuhörer. Eine unkomplizierter Treffpunkt, in dem sich die Musik von der schnöden Rolle der Hintergrundbeschallung befreit und sich frech in
den Vordergrund drängt. Nicht aufdringlich. Aber bestimmt.

WHY?

Nicht allgemein bekannt ist, dass Yoni Wolf, der aus Cincinatti, Ohio stammend nicht nur der Kopf des psychedlischen, Folk-Pop Kollektivs WHY? darstellt, sondern dass er darüber hinaus mit seinen ausgeprägten Fähigkeiten längst einigen Wirbel verursacht hat. Yoni Wolf war in jungen Jahren Mitbegründer des experimentellen Labelkollektivs Anticon und hat als Mitglied von cLOUDDEAD (zusammen mit Subtle Frontman Dose One und DJ/Producer Odd Nosdam) bereits breite Anerkennung bei Kritik und Publikum gefunden. Ihr wachsendes Vermächtnis, das nicht zuletzt im Vorgängeralbum “Elephant Eyelash” begründet liegt (eines der meistbesprochenen independent Alben des Jahres 2005), führen Yoni Wolf und seine WHY? Bandkollegen mit ihrer bis dato kritischsten und zugleich schlüssigsten Veröffentlichung weiter. “Alopecia” ist eine Sammlung harter Reime, die Yoni Wolf mit einem unbeugsamen Lächeln vorträgt, als Lebenslustiger, der erst verachtet und dann wiedergeboren wurde: kleine Selbstmorde, werden in Form von Gedichten über dichte musikalische Arbeiten gesungen. Seine kleinen Weisheiten über die Höhen und Tiefen des Alltags, wurden in Aborten niedergeschrieben und jetzt in die Welt geschickt. Yoni Wolfs tiefsinnige Lyrik ist wirklich eigensinning und seine Band spielt die dazu passende, versponnene, dunkle und expressive Musik. Für die Aufnahmen zu “Alopecia” hat sich das Trio WHY? (Yoni Wolf, sein Bruder Josiah und der Langzeit Kollaborateur Doug McDiarmid) zwei weitere Mitstreiter ins Boot geholt: Andrew Broder und Mark Erickson, die als Art-Rock Pioniere Fog bei Lex Records/Ninja Tune unter Vertrag sind. Die Aufnahmen fanden zu einem Grossteil in Minneapolis statt, was den 14 Songs dieses Albums eine gewisse Dringlichkeit verleiht, die auf bisherigen WHY? Veröffentlichungen fehlt. Von der hymnischen ersten Single “The Hollows” bis zum trockenen Rapsong “By Torpedo or Crohn’s”, schafft es die Band durchgängig die Grenzen ihres Sounds zu sprengen und extrem virtuos mit Stimmungen und Texturen zu spielen. Kein Thema und keine musikalische Idee ist hier Tabu und dennoch lassen sich die Geheimnisse von “Alopecia” leicht vermitteln und der Hörer wird geradezu dazu eingeladen, sich in der Entschlüsselung des Rätsels zu verlieren. Als Kind taggte Yoni Wolf die Strassen von Ohio mit der simplen und kryptischen Botschaft “WHY?”. Mit “Alopecia” scheint er diese Frage beantwortet zu haben.

WHY? For what? Which reason, cause or purpose? What unnamed goal?

In abstract, WHY? is the process of adapting to the somehow simple business of existing. WHY? is the searching for something clearly unreachable, with hopes of finding small significance along the way. The attempt to understand what’s really going on by observing, neither by telescope nor microscope, but by naked eye, the intimate details in the most mundane of life’s happenings. The attempt to describe the gist of the feeling of the tiniest modicum of The Great Universal Unutterable Joke we are all always not laughing at—except when we are. WHY? is living out the set-up of that old gag over and over, until we finally reach a punch-line. Or we die and we don’t.

WHY? is, most often, a trio of handsome Midwestern men with a shared past, present and future. Today, they fiddle around with skins, strings and bells through microphones attached to tape, presenting their “findings” to the waiting world. In an earlier decade they were all born in Cincinnati. And in the time in between, much did happen. Yoni Wolf, for instance, grew up the second son to an art book editor and a rabbi. He got his start recording bad poems and sloppy beats on the family synagogue’s forgotten 4-track. In junior high he discovered hip-hop; in art school he learned how to drop out. His brother Josiah played drums at worship service as a tot, dominated Concert Band as a teen, and fell in love with the compositions of Thelonious Monk on his way to University of Cincinnati’s music conservatory. Doug McDiarmid would eventually get expelled from UoC for carrying a stun gun, but was first conceived by two French teachers and taught piano while in kindergarten. He went to high school with the Wolfs, where he played in Steve Miller cover bands. In various permutations together and with other now-notables (Dose One, Odd Nosdam, Mr. Dibbs, Slug), these three created and/or contributed to a number of freewheeling rap and lo-fi bedroom-rock related projects, some still unexcavated: Miss Ohio’s Nameless, Apogee, Greenthink, Reaching Quiet, and the now seminal cLOUDDEAD. Their wildest dreams were achieved when they relocated to the West to make pop-inflected psychedelic folk-hop.

Yoni was the first to make the move. For four years, two EPs and one color-drenched album (2003’s Oaklandazulasylum), WHY? was his alone. He honed his trademark delivery—that sickly sweet, half-rapped, singsong-suicide style—shined up his wry, picturesque poetry on life, love and self, and developed a clip-and-collage composition aesthetic using keyboards, toys, guitars, samplers and anything worth banging on. When Doug and Josiah joined Yoni in Oakland, they brought a hoard of instruments and the ability to wail on every last one of them. By chops and imagination, WHY? grew into a thing of flesh, bones and fully fledged songs. In 2005, the band released Elephant Eyelash, and suddenly that once tenuous future seemed solid. Critics swooned; ladies lauded; WHY? did not rest. They toured (with Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo, and Islands). They collaborated (with Danielson, Department of Eagles, and Subtle; Yoni made Hymie’s Basement with Fog’s Andrew Broder). They put out yet more music (the Rubber Traits EP and “Dumb Hummer” 7-inch).
